American Idol: Boy Band Edition

I must admit that I used to be an avid boy band fan back in the day. Nsync, Backstreet Boys, 98 Degrees, you name it. I was a fan. Let's be honest though, 98 Degrees never achieved the fame that the Backstreet Boys or Nsync did. Therefore, I wasn't as big of fan of them as I was BSB and Nsync. Out of those two groups, it was always a toss up as to who I liked more. I went through phases and at times liked BSB more. Other times, I was thoroughly obsessed with Nsync. I've been to 3
Backstreet Boys concerts and one Nsync concert over the course of my life and I enjoyed every single one of them. I used to have posters covering the walls of my room and I recorded every appearance they had on TV. Yes, I was a huge fan, but I wasn't one of those girls who you always saw crying at their concerts or anything like that. I wasn't that extreme.

The reason I am writing about this was because having listened to practically every song on my iPod while at work, I decided I'd listen to the good old boy bands. I listened to all of them. I started thinking about how talented they really were and if they were even talented at all. I wondered what would happen if each member was on American Idol, singing solos. Who would win? Here is what I think would happen:

Out of the 3 groups there are 14 members- 98 Degrees: Jeff, Justin, Nick, and Drew. Nsync: Justin, Joey, JC, Chris, and Lance. BSB: Brian, AJ, Nick, Howie, and Kevin.

Chris from Nsync would get laughed at and his audition would be replayed for weeks. Definitely not in the top ten. I also think that neither Kevin, Justin from 98 Degrees(is he the ugly bald one? I think so, but that might be Jeff. We'll just pretend like it's Justin. Those of you who know the group, know who I'm talking about) or Joey would make it to the top ten.

So the top ten would be Jeff, Nick L., Drew, Justin, JC, Lance, Brian, AJ, Nick, and Howie.

In the first round
I think that Howie would get kicked off. Although, he does represent the only bit of diversity on this version of AI. Regardless, I think he would be gone. He doesn't have the looks and his voice is too high.

Second round: Lance would be kicked off. His voice is too deep and I don't think he has the range to make it as a solo artist. Plus, he's just goofy looking.

Third Round: I'm going to say that Jeff from 98 Degrees would be booted this round. I don't really know what he sounds like when singing alone so this is really just based on what I know about the other members of the competition.

Fourth Round: Drew would be knocked out of the competition. See reason for Jeff.

Fifth Round: I know a lot of girls like Nick Carter but he just doesn't do it for me. And his voice definitely doesn't do it for me. He tried it as a solo artist once and it didn't work out for him. So although some might be sad to see him go, it's definitely his turn.

Sixth Round: JC would be kicked off. I was always a big fan of his. He has a good voice, I just don't think he would accumulate enough votes to move past this round.

Seventh Round: AJ would be next to go. He has a really good voice and he has a different look than the rest. He would be like the "bad boy" of the competition.

Eighth Round: Sadly enough, I would say that Nick Lachey would be booted next. He's good, but I just don't think he's as good as the other two remaining. Albeit, he's definitely got the looks and the body. Any girl would take what's left of him.

The finale: Brian and Justin are left. This would be a very difficult decision. Brian has an amazing voice, there's no denying that, but Justin can sing as well. If it were based on looks alone, then Justin would win. Only if he looked like he does now, and not like he did when he was a member of Nsync. But if I had to decide based just on singing abilities, then Brian would take it. But America decides and it's not always just based on talent. A lot of things play into their decision- who is more likeable, who is more attractive, who can entertain better, who is most consistent, etc. So, after thinking about it long and hard(not really) the winner is...drumroll please.....Justin Timberlake. Brian has a great voice but I think Justin would be the better entertainer. He's also better looking. I didn't base my decision on the fact that Justin has already made it as a solo artist. If everyone was unknown at the beginning of the show, I still think he would win. Ultimately, I'd be happy with either decision.

So there you have it. "American Idol: Boy Bands Edition".

Excellent update Tara. Your indepth analysis of boy bands definitely rings true. And let's just be honest, wouldn't we all take whatever, even if it it's just a tiny bit, is left of Nick?

Wow, the usage/grammatical errors in that comment are astounding. Let me rephrase: And let's just be honest, wouldn't we all take whatever, even if it is just a tiny bit, of what's left of Nick?

Thank you.
